Instructions for Use

Use a net or rake to remove as much blanketweed (this looks like clumps of very thin green string), dead leaves etc. as possible. It is best to start this process in late Winter but will still be effective in Spring and Summer. Stack this material as close as possible to the edge of the water. It may contain a lot of small animals like newts; this will give them a chance to escape and get back into the water. Delay this step for 4 weeks if you have a lot of tadpoles present. It can be composted or put in green waste bin.

Immerse the bale completely in the water at one edge; you made need to use a stone or log to hold it down until saturated. Ensure white bacterial package is underneath and fully submerged. A shallow marginal shelf is the best spot, the straw needs sunlight and oxygen to decompose properly. Place near to a fountain, waterfall or pump inlet if you have them.

It is a good idea to tie the string to something solid at the margin to aid memory and retrieval. A date label can be helpful here too, or make a note on your calender. Peak control of algae will be achieved 2-4 weeks after placing bale in pond depending on water temperature, and will last for 3-4 months after this point. Straw can be composted after use, or put in green waste bin - cut open and follow same steps for stacking next to pond first if any creatures present inside. An average pond will require 2-3 bags over a year for good algae control if pond is in full sun.
